
 
Durango, Colorado is a communnity of about 15,000 people nestled in the Animas River Valley in Southwest Colorado. The town is the center of La Plata County, home to approximately 50,000 people. While the surrounding area is remote, wild, and rural, Durango has the character of a much larger town with its multitude of art galleries, fine dining establishments, great shops, and of course, Fort Lewis College, sitting on the mesa above town. Fort Lewis is a vital part of the community, home to nearly 4,000 students in session. There is a fantastic concert hall which has great acoustics and offers the town of Durango a great venue for seeing larger national acts. There are two National Historic Districts which is home to beautiful Victorian homes and tree lined 3rd avenue and the beautiful victorian era Downtown. Downtown Durango is rich in Wild West history and still retains the Western charm which brought the first settlers to this area over 100 years ago. It is the center for many great events and local celebrations. The weather in Durango is very pleasant, with over 300 sunny days a year! While there are warm days all year, the town has four distinct seasons.

The Durango Community Recreation Center is a spectacular 71,557 square foot facility, which occupies 3.97 acres of a 6.83-acre leased site from La Plata County. The building was designed to incorporate the historical features of the Fairgrounds by using the old grandstand stones, which have been a monument to the site for many years.
